Abseiling 2 (1 Day, Introductory Abseiling Skills)
If you want to learn the basics of abseiling and self rescue then this course is a must!
The ASM Introductory Abseiling Course will allow you to learn and develop the important skills and techniques required to participate in more challenging abseiling activities and adventures. If you're into exploring canyons or caves or just want to go abseiling for the sheer fun of it, this course will help you do it! The ASM Introductory Abseiling Course is without rival in technical content and instructional quality.
We start with a short review of your existing abseiling skills and knowledge and then proceed to the more advanced training.
The course content will include:
- selection, fitting and use of abseiling equipment
- selection and rigging of suitable anchor systems and single pitch abseils
- hazard identification and avoidance
- risk management strategies
- self-belaying methods
- belay techniques for abseiling
- dealing with emergencies such as a “stuck” abseiler
- basic rescue and self rescue systems.
While there is some theory involved in this one-day course, all the training will take place on the cliffs. If you’re serious about becoming independent on the cliffs, then the ASM Introductory Abseiling Course is a must!
We provide all specialist personal and group abseiling equipment including harnesses, helmets, etc. After we process your booking an information sheet detailing specific equipment and dress requirements will be sent to you.

The essential Rope Rescue skills, tips and tricks that all outdoor adventurers should know.
When things are at their worst you will need to be at your best and this course will show you how! The Abseil Rescue Skills Course covers the skills required by Abseilers, Canyoners and other ropes users to apply effective Self-Rescue techniques in the majority of emergency situations. The Abseil Rescue Skills Course is an important element of our highly recognised Abseiling 3 - Advanced Abseiling Course.
This course includes training in:
- Rope handling
- Ascending Using Knots, Mechanical Ascenders and Improvised Methods
- Improvised Abseiling Methods
- Assisted Abseils
- Rescue Abseils
- Lowering and Raising systems
- Improvised Casualty Evacuation methods
You will learn that in an emergency simply being able to abseil and prussik just isn't enough!

The ASM Advanced Abseiling Course is a combination of the Introductory Abseiling Course & Abseiling Rescue Skills Course. The Advanced Abseiling Course is ideal for individuals who wish to take a more active role when participating with others in group abseiling activities.
We start with a short review of your existing abseiling skills and knowledge and then proceed to the more advanced training.
This 2 day course covers:- selection, fitting and use of abseiling equipment
- selection and rigging of suitable anchor systems and single pitch abseils
- hazard identification and avoidance

Please note: this 4 day course includes Abseiling 2 & 3.
This training is designed for professional outdoor instructors, outdoor centre staff, teachers, defence personnel, outdoor club leaders and other professional and recreational based users who want to gain the skills of an Abseiling Guide / Leader but do not require a nationally recognised qualification.
ASM's Abseil Leader's Course integrates current international best practice Abseiling Leader Training and is aligned to Nationally Recognised units of competency.
ASM's Abseiling Leader's Course constitutes four one-day training modules with optional work placement / skills practice and an optional additional assessment process.
This 4 day course covers:
- selection, fitting and use of abseiling equipment
- selection and rigging of suitable anchor systems and single pitch abseils
- hazard identification and avoidance
- risk management strategies
- self-belaying methods
- belay techniques for abseiling
- dealing with emergencies such as a “stuck” abseiler
- basic rescue and self rescue systems.

ASM offers Single Pitch Abseil Guide - Natural Surfaces qualifications through a partnership with 5 Star Training and Consulting Pty Ltd (RTO ID 91664).
If you are interested in Canyon guiding this qualification is also available in combination with our Single Pitch Canyon Guiding Qualification at a discounted rate. We typically run the combined Canyon & Abseil course more frequently than the stand alone Abseil course.
This training is designed for professional outdoor instructors, outdoor centre staff, teachers, defence personnel, outdoor club leaders and other professional and recreational based users who want to gain the skills of a Single Pitch Abseiling Guide and a nationally recognised qualification.
This qualification integrates current industry best practice with the following Nationally Recognised units of competency:
- SISOABN304A Establish ropes for single pitch abseiling on natural surfaces
- SISOABN303A Apply single pitch abseiling skills on natural surfaces
- SISOABN202A Safeguard and abseiler using a single rope belay system
- SISOABN305A Guide abseiling on single pitch natural surfaces
- SISOABN301A Perform Vertical Rescues
This training is appropriate for those with previous abseil and/or other roping experience. Prior experience in a guiding or supervisory capacity is also of benefit.
The training is delivered as a four day intensive of technical training followed by a minimum of three days work experience and private practice. The assessment is two days and incorporates simulated rigging and rescue scenarios as well as a day guiding clients of ASM.
