The Australian School of Mountaineering has a reputation for employing Australia’s most highly qualified and experienced Instructing & Guiding Team. Our Senior Instructors are full time professionals with a high level of formal training and guiding accreditation as well as a vast amount of international climbing and adventure experience. Thew average length of service for current ASM Senior Instructors is six years, however Senior Instructor positions do become available on an occasional basis. In addition to the Senior Instructing Team, ASM also employs a select group of freelance instructors and guides on a seasonal basis. Currently ASM have openings for freelance instructors to work during the 2006/2007 summer season and welcomes employment enquiries from suitably qualified and experienced instructors. The following qualifications and accreditation are typical of those held by our Senior Staff and are indicative of the standard required for employment as a Senior Instructor at ASM: -

Job Title: Senior Instructor
Pay Rate / Salary Range: $150 - $200 Gross per day
Location: Upper Blue Mountains, regional areas, occasional interstate and International
Reports To: Operations Director

Job Summary
The position involves instructional and supervisory duties on a range of outdoor adventure activities including Abseiling, Rockclimbing, Canyoning and Mountaineering Technical Courses & Expeditions. The position will also involve facilitation and debriefing roles on various corporate training programs.

Principle Responsibilities

  • To provide technical instruction, supervision and guidance to clients and Junior Instructors participating in daily adventure courses and activities.
  • To assist with the development and marketing of ASM outdoor training products and recreational activities.
  • Such other occasional duties as the Operations Director may reasonably require.

Senior Instructor Qualifications
While Senior Instructors are not required to possess all of the listed qualifications the following certification and accreditation are typical of those held by our Senior Staff. This list is indicative of the standard required for employment as a Senior Instructor at ASM: -

Nationally Accredited Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation
  • Workplace Trainer Assessor Accreditation

Canyon Guiding Qualifications

  • Bronze Medallion
  • Swiftwater Rescue
  • ASM Canyon Leader Certification

First Aid & Emergency Response

  • Advanced / Senior First-Aid or First Responder Certificate
  • WFAC Leaders Wilderness First Aid Certificate
  • Avalanche Safety Management 1 Program
  • ASPA Advanced Emergency Care Course

Experience Requirements
In addition to formal qualifications and accreditation all Senior Instructing Staff must have extensive experience in the fields and areas that they expect to work in. Typically ASM Senior Guides and Instructors will have climbing and expedition experience in most of the World’s greater ranges including multiple ascents and expeditions to Himalayan Peaks, Yosemite Big Walls, Polar Regions and Hard Alpine Routes in areas such as New Zealand and the European Alps etc. All Senior Instructors are expected to maintain a high profile, active recreational interest in their preferred adventure pursuits.

Related Professional Experience
The majority of ASM Senior Instructors have previous experience in related professional positions such as Antarctic Field Officers, Ski Instructors, Paramedics, Military Survival Instructors and Rescue Personnel. While not absolutely essential, secondary experience in similar areas can be an advantage.

Job Title: Freelance Instructor (Abseiling, Rockclimbing, and Canyoning)
Pay Rate / Salary Range: $130 - $175 Gross per day
Location: Katoomba and the Upper Blue Mountains
Reports To: Senior Instructors / Operations Director

Job Summary
The position involves general instruction and guiding duties on a range of outdoor adventure activities including one day Abseiling, Rockclimbing and Canyoning courses and tours.

Principle Responsibilities

  • To provide technical instruction, supervision and guidance to clients participating in daily adventure courses and activities
  • To assist with general maintenance and upkeep of equipment, facilities and plant directly related to the position
  • Such other occasional duties as the Operations Director may reasonably require

Industry Preferred Qualifications

  • ACIA Climbing Instructor Qualification (Climbing Instructors)
  • Bronze Medallion (Canyoning Instructors / Guides)
  • ASM Canyon Leader Certification (Canyoning Instructors / Guides)
  • ASM Abseil Leader Certification (Abseiling Instructors / Guides)

Nationally Accredited Qualifications

  • Certificate III / IV in Outdoor Recreation

First Aid & Emergency Response

Experience Requirements

  • Must be able to demonstrate a well-rounded level of practical experience to support formal qualifications
