MOUNTAINEERING SKILLS (Alpine I)
Our introductory Mountaineering program is excellent preparation for novice climbers getting ready to tackle more ambitious courses or climbing adventures in higher mountain ranges abroad.
On arrival at Jindabyne you will be met by the ASM Instructors who will begin to prepare you for your five-day mountaineering adventure. Your Instructors will fit you out in the latest equipment, ensure that you are properly clothed and ready for your journey. The group will then be transported by minibus, over-snow vehicle and then finally by skis or snowshoes to our unique on snow Basecamp which is situated in close proximity to our favourite climbing areas.
From the Basecamp, you will be taught under the expert guidance of your instructors all the latest techniques in modern mountaineering.
Some of the subjects covered will include:
- The use of specialist alpine climbing equipment such as Ice Axes, Ice Hammers, Crampons, Ice Screws and Snowstakes
- How to set up secure Belay Anchors on snow and ice
- Efficient Rope Handling and Belaying skills for mountaineering
- Climbing techniques for snow and ice such as Front Pointing and French Technique
- Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue
- Snow Camping and Alpine Survival.
You will also experience climbing on the famous Blue Lake ice. We wouldnt dare think of sending you home without it!
Grade: Moderate fitness, Some basic rockclimbing experience is also useful but is not compulsory (see our ROCK I Course for details).

ADVANCED MOUNTAINEERING & ICE CLIMBING (Alpine II)
The Advanced Mountaineering Course is the ideal training programme for climbers with previous experience who wish to improve and advance their skills in modern alpinisme. This course is the most advanced course of its type in Australia!
Our instructors will meet you at Jindabyne and from here we will depart for our high mountain Basecamp. Over the next five days your instructors will select quality alpine routes of moderate to advanced standard to test and improve your alpine climbing skills. Many talk in awe of the fabled Blue Lake Water Ice - we wont just be talking about it, well be climbing lots of it! Through extensive experience our instructors know where and when to find the best ice conditions and they will ensure that you get to climb it to the fullest!
This course will place particular emphasis on steep ice and mixed alpine climbing:
- The use of more specialised rock and ice equipment
- Important subjects such as safe belaying on ice, snow and alpine
- Protection of steep ice routes and mixed climbs
Time will also be devoted to refining your "Front Pointing" and other steep ice skills so that you will learn to climb with confidence and style.
Grade: Good fitness, you must have basic mountaineering skills, previous skiing experience is an advantage but is not essential. Some basic rockclimbing experience is also useful but is not compulsory

SKI - MOUNTAINEERING (Alpine III)
The course for experienced skiers who like to ski "off the edge"! Let our guides show you the best backcountry ski runs in Australia!
To participate you will need previous skiing experience to at least intermediate standard and have an interest in becoming proficient in all aspects of Technical Mountain ski touring. While the course is essentially an instructional program this instruction takes place "on the move" allowing skiers to undertake as much of the finest off piste skiing that can be had in five days.
Subjects covered include:
- The use of modern Alpine Ski Touring equipment such as Climbing Skins, Full Release Alpine Touring Bindings and Mountaineering Skis
- How to ski in different snow conditions, wet snow, ice and powder!
- Skiing on all types of terrain, chutes, couloirs and steep slopes
- Avalanche Awareness and Snow Safety including the use of Avalanche Transceivers, Roped Skiing in difficult terrain and Self Arrest Techniques
- The use of Ice Axes and Crampons
- Snow Survival and Camping Techniques are also included.
Grade: Good fitness, ski skills to an intermediate level, no need to be stylish but you should be capable of strong stem and parallel turns!

SNOW CAMPING & SURVIVAL
The winter alpine landscape can be as dangerous as it is beautiful. Our Snow Survival Course is designed to train you in the art of winter snow survival. Our guides and instructors are experts in this field!
The subjects covered in this five day course include:
- Protection, how to dress and equip yourself for winter travel and survival
- Shelter, how to use snow-tents, how to build snowcaves, igloos and wind breaks
- Travel; how to travel on the snow by skis, snowshoes and crampons
- Navigation; how to safely find your way in blizzards and white outs using map, compass and other methods
- Food & Water; how to cook food and find water in the winter snowscape
- First Aid; how to treat hypothermia (exposure), snow-blindness and other winter related injuries.
Grade: Moderate fitness

AVALANCHE AWARENESS COURSE
Designed for mountaineers, snowboarders and ski tourers and staffed by Avalanche Safety qualified ASM instructors.
This three-day avalanche course will provide the winter mountain user with the important information and skills required to improve safety and awareness in avalanche prone terrain.
Some of the subjects covered in this specialist course include:
- Practical Avalanche Threat Assessment Methods
- Snowpack Analysis and interpretation
- Avalanche Terrain Recognition and Route Selection
- Avalanche Victim Search and Rescue Procedures
- Intensive Avalanche Transceiver Use and Practice.
Grade: Moderate fitness, some previous skiing experience is an advantage but not essential

THE NEW ZEALAND ALPINE CLIMBING EXPERIENCE
For those who have some previous mountaineering experience and wish to sink their crampons into something more challenging!
We employ some of the finest and most experienced Australian and New Zealand NZMGA / IFMGA Mountain Guides to instruct and guide on this advanced alpine climbing program. We wanted to make the New Zealand Alpine Climbing Experience more than a course! In fact its more like a seminar, alpine climbing holiday and a mountaineering expedition all in one complete package!
The activity is designed for participants with previous rockclimbing or general mountaineering experience. This dynamic program will help to increase your experience and knowledge and give you confidence when attempting your own summits! Over the course of ten days you will accompany your guides in small groups on classic Southern Alps mountain routes of varying styles and difficulty. Specialist coaching in modern mountaineering skills will be offered throughout each climbing day.
Grade: Good fitness, you must have Basic Mountaineering Skills (see our Mountaineering Skills (Alpine I) Course for details), Some basic rockclimbing experience is also useful but is not compulsory
