The traditional Australian Bushcraft and Survival Skills are so important, so easily learned and yet so often neglected by modern outdoor adventurers! The knowledge and experience you need to travel, live comfortably and survive in the bush or mountains can be readily gained by participating in these Survival and Navigation Courses. Our expert Survival Instructors bring experience from a broad range of backgrounds including those of Adventure Racers, Military Survival Specialists and Extreme Expedition Leaders.
BUSH SURVIVAL COURSE

This course is designed to give you the essential skills in Bush Survival and Wilderness Travel. This two-day course is run at our Bush Survival Basecamp and will also feature discussion and lectures on various survival topics. As with all ASM courses, we emphasise hands on approach when teaching survival skills, as a result there will be ample opportunity to actually practice the techniques. After this course you will have acquired a new skill set that will make you more self reliant and confident when travelling in the wilderness.

- Emergency Shelter Construction
- Survival Fire-lighting Skills
- Food and Water Procurement
- Emergency Signalling ß Survival Navigation
- Emergency First Aid and Survival Equipment Selection.

WILDERNESS NAVIGATION COURSE
One of the most essential skills required by any outdoor traveller be they Climber, Bushwalker or Skier is to know how to navigate with a map and compass!
Simply owning a map and compass is not a guarantee that you can safely find your way through the bush, maps and compasses are not good luck charms, but precision instruments, which require skill and good training to be effective. Our instructors are expert navigators and are highly qualified and experienced in teaching this essential outdoor skill.
On the second day of this course participants will get the opportunity to put all their newly learned skills to use on a navigation trek and orienteering exercise.
The subjects covered in this course include:
- Maps Types, Use in the Field, Features, Contours, Grid References,
- Compass Features, Types, General Usage, Field Bearings, Map Bearings, Resections, Marching on a Compass Bearing
- Route Planning, Route Selection, Route Cards, Time and Distance Estimation
- Emergency Navigation Techniques using the Sun and the Stars
- GPS Features, Operating Functions, Use and Limitations.
